In a strategic move just ahead of the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, Sony stole the spotlight by hosting a new State of Play broadcast during the opening week of Summer Game Fest. While major surprises were few, the showcase still offered a glimpse at several exciting titles coming to PlayStation 5 and PC, solidifying Sony’s intent to remain at the forefront of the gaming conversation.
Key Reveals: Marvel Fighting Souls, 007 First Light, and Ghost of Yōtei
The June 2025 edition of State of Play introduced Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, a new fighting game created by Arc System Works. Set for release in 2026 on PS5 and PC, this title features high-octane 4v4 battles with popular Marvel heroes, presented in an intense, chaotic style that’s sure to appeal to fans of both the MCU and Japanese fighting games.
Another standout moment was the reveal of 007 First Light. Drawing inspiration from both Uncharted and Hitman, this James Bond game introduces a fresh take on the iconic spy character—bearing more than a passing resemblance to Tom Cruise. With slick cutscenes, daring missions, and a focus on gadget-based gameplay, this promising title is also slated for 2026.
Sony also shared a new trailer for Ghost of Yōtei, a major AAA exclusive set to launch on October 2, 2025. A more in-depth gameplay preview is expected in July. Additionally, fans of Astro’s Playroom will be pleased to learn that five new levels and characters are on the way, alongside the return of the beloved Astro controller.
No Updates on Wolverine, Spider-Man 3, or God of War
Despite the excitement, several high-profile franchises were notably absent. There were no updates on Marvel’s Wolverine, Spider-Man 3, God of War, or Resident Evil 9. Nor were there any announcements regarding the return of classic PlayStation IPs like Uncharted or The Last of Us, which left some fans slightly disappointed.
Additional Announcements: Retro Revivals and Artistic Indies
The presentation also included a strong lineup of smaller and retro-inspired releases. A batch of classic titles is being added to the PlayStation Plus catalog, including Deus Ex, Twisted Metal 3 & 4, Resident Evil 2 & 3, Myst, and Riven. Meanwhile, Giant Squid—the studio behind Abzû—unveiled Sword of the Sea, a visually stunning and poetic adventure game set to arrive on August 19 via PlayStation Plus.
Sea of Remnants, an imaginative pirate-themed title featuring dragons, mermaids, and other fantastical creatures, also made its debut. For fans of multiplayer exploration games, Tides of Tomorrow was introduced as a vibrant co-op title that blends planetary and oceanic exploration. It’s scheduled for release on February 24, 2026.
PS VR2 Makes a Surprise Appearance
Just when many had written it off, PlayStation VR2 made a quiet but intriguing return with Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow. This stealth-based game invites players to embody a shadowy thief, featuring mechanics like bow-and-arrow combat, climbing, and immersive hand-tracking. It promises a fresh experience for VR enthusiasts looking for more narrative-driven gameplay.
Looking Ahead
While Sony didn’t deliver a blowout presentation filled with blockbuster surprises, the June 2025 State of Play effectively showcased a diverse and stylistically rich set of games. From superhero showdowns and spy thrillers to creative indies and nostalgic classics, the lineup sets the tone for an eventful year ahead on PlayStation 5.
